How to Adopt an Animal

Adoption Process
Our re-homing procedure is outlined here – further details on each animal adoption process are in the sections below.
- Please read all the information on the animal’s web profile, taking careful note of any special requirements they may have.
- Complete the Adoption Application Form below for the animal you are interested in.
- For farm animals, email your interest to Farm@freshfields.org.uk
- For horses, email your interest to Wales@freshfields.org.uk
- For small animals, email smallanimals@freshfields.org.uk
- We will respond as soon as possible, but please be patient. If you are a suitable match, we will arrange an appointment for you to visit the animal at the rescue. We try to contact everyone who applies, but sometimes this isn’t possible due to the volume of applications we may receive.
- We will need to carry out a home check, which may be in person or by video. We may ask you for photos of specific areas where the animal will live.
- Once all parties are happy, we can proceed to the adoption.
- At adoption, we will advise you of any follow-up procedure.
ADOPTION FEES
Our adoption fees include several treatments
Microchipping – We microchip all our animals before they leave our care to ensure that they are registered if they were to go missing.
Vaccinations – All our animals are vaccinated against serious disease. This must be continued annually
Dogs: Distemper, Hepatitis, Leptospirosis, Parvo virus and Parainfluenza
Cats: Feline Infectious Enteritis and Feline Flu
Rabbits: Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease
Flea and worm treatments – We treat all our animals against fleas and worms before they leave us.
Neutered – All our animals are neutered before leaving our rescue. This prevents the ever-increasing number of animals who end up homeless themselves. If, for any reason, this has not happened before the adoption date, eg due to young animals, then you will be required to return them to the rescue for the procedure. For cats in Wales out of our catchment and vet area, we ask you to sign a neuter agreement, and you will be required to provide proof of the procedure.

How to Adopt a Dog
Please read all the information on the dog profile page, taking careful note of any special requirements they may have. If you feel you can offer a secure, happy and permanent home, please complete our dog adoption application form HERE
How to Adopt a Cat
We will contact you if we think you are a match for your chosen cat(s), or we can match you with another cat. We will arrange an appointment for you and your family to visit the rescue. This does not guarantee you will be a suitable match for the cat, as often cats choose their owner rather than the other way around!
We ask that all of the family come along where possible, as seeing the dynamics of the family with the cat helps us assess how the cat will fit in. If all goes well we reserve the cat for you and arrange a home check. In some instances, home checks are carried out prior to the visit to the shelter. The home check is to ensure that the environment is a safe one for the cat. Some things we will check are how busy the area is, proximity to main roads, whether there is a cat flap and if not, what suitable outside shelter is available for the cat. If there are any concerns, we ask that you resolve the issue.
Once the home check is passed, we can complete the official adoption at the rescue centre. At adoption, we will provide you with any special dietary requirements, medical information, and microchip details. We will remain on the microchip as a second point of contact.
Finally, we will take the adoption fee. You will then be ready to head home with your new family member. If at any time you need advice or help, please do contact us.
Please note:
Generally, kitten re-homing is based upon the age, size and personality of the kitten to suit your home and family. Please do not be offended if we suggest a particular kitten, rather than one you may of chosen.
If you live in rented accommodation, we will require written permission from your landlord for you to keep a pet at the property before we can complete the adoption.
How to Adopt a Farm Animal
If you are interested in offering a home to a Farm animal please email farm@freshfields.org.uk
We will contact you to discuss the needs of the animal you are interested in and to understand why you want to adopt. Farm animals will only be rehomed to be treated as a much-loved, albeit outdoor, member of the family.
If we believe you are suitable to offer a permanent, safe, secure and loving home, a home check will be arranged. This is to ensure the living area for the animal is suitable, and that everything necessary has been provided. It’s important to get these things right at the beginning so there is less likelihood of things not working out later.
When we are all happy, we will agree on a time for the animal to be collected from us, in some cases, we may bring the animal to you. Adoption paperwork will be completed and a pre-agreed adoption fee charged.
We will always be available to offer help and advice before, during, and after the adoption. Animals should not be passed on to third parties. If you are no longer able to care for the animal you must get in touch.
Please note: there is strict government legislation that comes along with keeping sheep, and pigs. To find out more about it and ensure that you comply, take a look at the following websites

How to Adopt a Horse or Pony
Please take a look at the profiles of horses and ponies available, taking careful note of any special requirements they may have. If you feel you can offer a safe and secure home, please email Wales@freshfields.org.uk. Good homes can make a world of difference to our rescued horses, and also free up resources to enable us to help other equines in need. Please do get in touch!
We will contact you to discuss the horses in our care, their needs and personalities and your experience and type of home you can offer. We will then invite you to the rescue so that we can discuss the options in greater detail and you can meet the horses we have available to go out on loan. Our horses go out with a ‘loan’ agreement rather than being adopted. we will explain this to you and how this works together with the legalities.
If a horse is suitable for you, we will arrange to visit your premises and carry out a home check, this is to make sure that the right environment is in place before the horse arrives with you. If we have any concerns we will ask that you resolve the issue.
Once everything is in place and both parties are happy, arrangements will be made to transfer the animal to your property, and the loan agreement will come into force.
We charge an ‘on loan’ arrangement fee, the cost of which varies from animal to animal but will be agreed with you in advance.
Please remember… we are always available if you have any concerns or require advice.
How to Adopt a Small Animal
Please take a look at the small animals on our website, taking careful note of any special requirements certain animals may have. Once you have done this, if you feel you can offer a secure, happy and permanent home please email smallanimals@freshfields.org.uk providing details of any existing small animals and photos of your current set up to house the animals. If you do not already have any set up we will be able to advise regarding the requirements and the needs of individual animals.
We will contact you to discuss your pet owning history, the type of animal that you are interested in, your current circumstances and whether we believe the animal is right for you.
Different small animals have different needs, but space and the freedom to exercise at will is essential for their well-being. Rabbits, guinea pigs, and ferrets have minimum requirements in terms of their housing, and this will be detailed on their profiles. Also for them to be happy, they need a companion of their own species.
If you are looking to adopt a companion for your existing animal, we will bond the pair at our rescue, This will involve a stay with us for your existing pet. We will provide full information on this process.
Assuming everything goes well in the bonding, we will then arrange an appointment for you to come back to the rescue for the adoption. . At this point we will give you all the information you require regarding vaccinations, the microchipping details, and neutering (if applicable).
Once the adoption fee has been paid, you can take your new family member home.
